Experimental film has always taken cues from music. Before sync sound, filmmakers animated to rhythm and cut to a beat. Len Lye and Norman McLaren scratched images straight onto the filmstrip and drew their soundtracks by hand; Mary Ellen Bute built pictures out of oscilloscope signals. The idea that a sound could generate or organise an image is old, and it returns with every new tool.


This programme collects short works in that tradition. A few are edited to a rhythm. Others are driven by an audio signal. Most were made moving back and forth between analog film and the computer. Several works will be screening for the first time.



Short works, roughly 50 minutes.



Derrick Schultz is a post-AI artist and filmmaker working across computational and photochemical film. He teaches at NYU's ITP and Mono No Aware in Brooklyn, NY.
